2020 Race Format Announcement
Dear Kodiak Community,
Thank you very much for your patience while we work on bringing the Kodiak to you in this unusual year. After many discussions with our city and our permitting agencies, we have decided to sidestep the uncertainty of planning a larger scale event and will instead move forward with a modified format this year. We're very excited about this alternate format event and we sincerely hope you will be too. We understand that our plans may not fit with yours, so we have several options for you to choose from.
2020 Kodiak Race Formats
#1 – Open Course – September 9-10 & 13, 2020
The full Kodiak course will be open September 9-10 and September 13 for registered runners in all distances to race in an open format. There will be several different starting time slots to choose from on each of those days. On July 1, you will be able to choose your day and time slot on a first-come, first-served basis. There will not be a mass start or a finish festival this year. The Open Course will be marked and there will be limited aid in some locations, such as water. You can run self-supported or you may have a small crew meet you at the majority of our aid station locations. Runners in the 100M and 50M races will be required to have at least 1 support crew member to participate. You must be comfortable supporting yourself both with or without your own crew if you choose to run on the Open Course. Pacers will be allowed in the 100M distance as usual at mile 55 and pacers will also be allowed for any race distance anytime you are running in the dark. The ultra distances may also be run over the course of the 3 Open Course days. For example, the 100M race may be run ‘staged’ over 2 or 3 days. Your results will be categorized accordingly. [Note – we are confirming ITRA points will be earned toward UTMB.]
Many more details about the Open Course format will be published in the coming days, but we wanted to let you know about this option right away so you can start planning. Everyone on the current waitlist can complete their registration on July 1. We will start a new waitlist when we reach capacity.
#2 – Elite Race – September 11-12, 2020
We will host an elite field for the 100M and Half Marathon races on September 11-12, 2020 in Big Bear Lake, CA. The 100M race will start at 6PM on Friday, September 11 and the Half Marathon will start on Saturday, September 12. The maximum capacity in each race will be up to 80 runners - 40 men and 40 women that meet qualifying standards. There is a prize purse of $22,800 in total, as part of the Spartan Trail World Championship. The application period will open June 29 and applications will be accepted starting July 13. Check back on our website for details on the qualifying standard, prize purse breakdown, and to apply. Details will be published shortly.
